The Role of the Allergist in Cost-Effective Treatment of Asthma
75%
Primary care physicians and specialists both treat asthma. Until recently, the question of who achieves the better outcomes at less total cost has been based on miscellaneous data, anecdotal evidence, assumptions and hunches. Now, an analysis of 14 clinical studies provides documentation that allergists achieve better outcomes at less cost. This conclusion has important implications for patients in managed health care, as well as for the purchasers of managed care programs. Includes sections on:
The impact of asthma,
Asthma treatment outcomes,
Asthma treatment costs,
Treatment guidelines,
When to refer to an allergist,

This study will examine whether antidepressant therapy is associated with improvement in mood, asthma symptoms, and quality of life in depressed patients with asthma.
We hope to benefit the asthma community by providing a
research study which will provide medication and psychiatric consultations free of cost to asthma patients with untreated depression, as well as provide for transportation costs to and from the research site. If
interested in participating, please call or send an email to Ava.Star@UTSouthwestern.edu
