Asthma is a major public health problem of increasing concern in the United States. Between 1980 and 1994, the prevalence of asthma increased 75% overall and 74% among children 5 to 14 years of age. Asthma now affects nearly 5 million people who are younger than 18 years of age. Low-income populations, minorities, and children living in inner cities experience disproportionately higher morbidity and mortality due to asthma. Statistics report that asthma is the number one cause of school absenteeism, accounting for at least 125 million school days lost each year. Parents say they are frustrated by inflexible school policies in their attempts to help their children perform up to their potential in a safe, encouraging and productive learning atmoshere.

There are over three million schildren in the United States that have been diagnosed with asthma, which means that it is the respnosibility of close to six million parents to deal with, and manage, their child's ailment. The obvious goal is to prevent suffering, and allow asthmatic children to mature into healthy, normal adults. But what is not nearly so obvious at the outset are some of the barriers that lie in wait, and threaten to prevent the asthmatic child from leading a full life.
