About 15% of children have seasonal allergies by their seventh birthdays, according to a study in the November 2000 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Boys, firstborn children, those with eczema, those with food allergies, and those whose parents have seasonal allergies are all more likely to develop seasonal allergies. Early wheezing does not appear to increase the chances.

Eczema, also referred to as Atopic Dermatitis, is an inflammation (reddening and swelling) of the skin which is very itchy. Symptoms vary from mild to severe. It is chronic condition, lasting for many months or years and is very common, affecting at least five per cent of the people at some time in their lives. Other skin conditions associated with allergy are Contact Dermatitis, Urticaria (hives) and
Angioedema (swelling of various parts of the body).
