Chronic Fatigue Investigation & Laboratory tests

Chronic and ill-defined illnesses such as chronic fatigue(CFS) are opportunities for developers of tests and treaments to market an array of unproven products and services. Some tests are well-motivated but don't work, most are expensive and distracting, a few are downright fraudulent.
There are a number of basic tests, familiar to all physicians that screen for the most important major diseases that could present as chronic fatigue. This site lists tests which, although not exhaustive, is of value.
This site also lists tests with two ratings on a 1 to 10 scale. The first rating is an estimate of the validity of the test - does the test actually do what people claim? - how reliably does it measure what it is supposed to measure? The second rating shows the value of the test either in assessing the mechanism of symptom production or in directing treatment.
An excellent page and very useful.

Delayed patterns of food allergy are not obvious and generally go unrecognized. Symptom onset is delayed many hours after eating foods and chronic disease is often the result.

Diagnosis

During an acute attack it is usually easy to make the diagnosis from the characteristic symptoms and signs. When the patient is referred for examination, symptoms may or may not be present. The diagnosis is then based on a detailed case history, physical examination, lung function, laboratory examination and in selected cases, a metacholine/histamine or exercise test. A daily recording of symptoms, lung function and of response to medication will help in the assessment of the reversibility of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment. Some of the important aspects of medical history are as follows:
